As a compact version of the P226, the SIG Sauer P228 is constructed with a shorter slide and barrel and is offered only in 9mm configuration. First introduced in 1989, the P228 was also cosmetically altered to have less pointed edges, promoting safer concealed carrying. During the early 1990s the US Armed forces adopted the P228 as the M11 pistol, which was disseminated to the Military Police and various other units. The P228 pistol has also been used among law enforcement and military forces worldwide. Manufacture of the P228 was discontinued after the P229 was offered in 9mm configuration.
